• Tier 2: Small groups within a class can work on different standards and/or different types of Penda activities in comparison to another group
• Through Penda reports, teachers can easily identify areas of remediation and intervention needed.

How To Do It

Tier 2 – Small Group

• The teacher recognizes the need to differentiate instruction to meet varying levels of learners within one class (low, medium, high).
• The teacher creates learning groups within Penda and places students into appropriate groups.
• Appropriate Penda activities for each group are identified and assigned to groups.

Example

Mr. Hudson has varying levels of students in his period 4 middle school science class. While 80% of his students are meeting grade-level core curriculum standards, he’s identified 8 students who consistently are not performing to grade-level expectations and 3 students are performing above level. Therefore, Mr. Hudson has created 3 Penda groups within his period 4 class: the whole class group, the small group, and the additional practice group. He’s placed students appropriately into the groups that student’s best fit and assigned each group various Penda activities that target particular standards. He also paid attention to the activity types. Mr. Hudson also assigned specific Penda activities for 4 other students in period 4 that are continuing to have difficulty. Mr. Hudson plans to have students complete these individualized Penda activities. Next, he plans to meet with each student one-on-one to provide direct instruction as necessary.
