How to Use AI Grading for Written Response Questions
AI-powered grading automatically scores student written responses — saving teachers time and providing students with fast, high-quality feedback.
Step 1: Access AI Grading
AI grading automatically processes student written responses and provides feedback within 24 hours. To review AI-generated scores:
- Go to the Assignment Report.
- In the Activities summary area, under the Grade header, click the Grade icon
to open the AI Feedback Page.
Step 2: Review and Apply AI Grades
From the AI Feedback Page, teachers can:
- View the writing prompt and assessment criteria (rubric) used by the AI to evaluate responses.
- See the class roster and each student’s AI feedback status. A yellow dot indicates the AI has evaluated the response and feedback is ready for review.
- Scroll down to read each student’s written response and the corresponding AI-generated feedback.
- Accept and apply the AI-generated score and feedback.
- Decline the AI score and manually update the score and feedback before applying it.
Notes:
- After an AI-generated grade is applied, teachers can still adjust or override the AI grade at any time — teacher-assigned grades always take priority.
- Students receive a notification on their dashboard once an AI grade has been applied, keeping them informed of their progress.
Understand When AI Grading Applies
- Teacher-issued and Admin-issued assignments require teacher review before grades are applied. After day three, AI grades and feedback are automatically applied.
- PAS Assignments and Assessments are auto-graded immediately — no teacher approval needed.
Manage AI Grading Settings (Teachers)
Teachers can disable AI grading for a new assignment directly in the Assignment Wizard by turning off the AI Grading option during creation.
When creating a new PAS Plan, administrators can also disable AI grading during setup.
Manage AI Grading Settings (District Administrators)
By default, AI grading is enabled for all accounts. Administrators can change these settings:
- Go to Options in the left navigation bar.
- Under AI Tools, toggle AI Grading on or off.
- To require manual grading for Assessments or PAS assignments, uncheck those options.
