Edit or Delete an Assignment
This article explains how to modify or remove an assignment within Penda Learning. Whether you need to update an assignment name, change the scheduled dates, or remove an assignment entirely, you can do so through the Assignment management interface.
Assignments can only be edited or deleted if no students have attempted or started any activity within that assignment.
How to Edit an Assignment
To modify an existing assignment that has not yet been started.
Step 1 - Navigate to Assignments:
Click Assignments in the left navigation bar, or select a specific class period and click Assignments under the class menu.
Step 2 - Find the Assignment:
Locate the specific assignment you wish to change from the displayed list.
Step 3 - Select Edit:
Click the Edit Assignment icon
located to the right of the assignment
Note: If this button is not visible, it indicates at least one student has already started the assignment.
You will be guided through the Assignment Wizard where you can update:
Assignment Name
Allow students to options (retry activities, review own work, access the assignment after it's due, use immersive reader)
- Start date and time
- Recipients (classes, groups, or individual students)
- Activities (add, delete, or rearrange activities, and toggle "Require Mastery" on/off)
How to Delete an Assignment
To remove an assignment that has no student attempts.
Step 1 - Navigate to Assignments:
Click Assignments in the left navigation bar, or select a specific class period and click Assignments under the class menu.
Step 2 - Find the Assignment:
Locate the specific assignment you wish to change from the displayed list.
Step 3 - Delete the Assignment
- Click on the Delete Assignment
icon next the specific assignment.
- Confirm deletion by clicking Delete in the confirmation prompt.
Additional Rules
To maintain system stability and accurate reporting, assignments cannot be deleted or edited once a student has started them. This restriction is in place for two primary reasons:
Gamification Syncing: As soon as a student opens an activity, they begin earning experience points (XP), credits, and streak progress. Deleting the assignment would cause discrepancies in their avatar store balance and leaderboard standing.
Data Integrity: The moment an activity is launched, the system logs backend data including standards mastery, time-on-task, and progress markers. A "hard delete" of an active assignment can result in "orphaned data," leading to synchronization errors in your teacher reports and potential technical glitches in your dashboard.
Pro-Tips for Teachers
- If the "Edit" or "Delete" icons are missing, it is a confirmation that at least one student has already interacted with the assignment.
